The Waterfall Method
The Waterfall Ledger

If you lost your job next week, do you know where you stand?

A private Google Sheet that turns your balances into three readings: your runway in months, your FI stage, and your Debt Freedom level. Check in monthly or quarterly. About ten minutes.

FI stands for financial independence: the point where your invested assets can cover your spending.

Six figure income. No net worth number.

34%

of workers laid off in the last two years used up most or all of their savings. Only 10% stayed financially stable.
Resume Genius survey of 1,000 workers, Jul 2026

25x

your annual spending is the usual FIRE number at a 4% withdrawal rate. Most high earners have never written theirs down.

readings that answer the real question, do I have enough: your stage, your debt, and how many months you could cover.

One page. Your stage, your trend, your next move.

Three readings. One never lowers another.

FI stands for financial independence: the point where your invested assets can cover your spending. The six FI stages show how far along you are. They are measured on invested assets: brokerage, retirement and HSA. Your home counts toward net worth, not your stage, because a house does not fund withdrawals.

1
Financial Fragility

Net worth is zero or below, or accessible assets cover less than 3 months of expenses.

2
Stability

Net worth is positive and at least 3 months of expenses sit in cash and brokerage. The floor is set.

3
Coast FI

Invested assets alone, with no further contributions, are on track to reach your number by your target retirement age.

4
Lean FI

Invested assets cover a minimal lifestyle.

5
Full FI

Invested assets cover your current lifestyle.

6
Fat FI

Invested assets cover your lifestyle with margin to spare.

Debt Freedom, its own track

Paying Down, Debt Free, or Fully Debt Free. You can be Coast FI and still be Paying Down.

Runway, a meter

Months your cash and brokerage could cover if income stopped. Thin under 3, Building 3 to 6, Strong 6 or more, with the cash only figure beside it.

Private by design.

Questions

Can you see my numbers?

No. Your copy sits in your Google account. We have no access to it, and the sheet has no scripts or connections that send data anywhere.

How long does a check in take?

About ten minutes the first time, less after that. Round numbers are fine.

Why does my home not count toward my FI stage?

A house does not fund withdrawals. Home equity counts toward net worth. FI stages are measured on invested assets: brokerage, retirement and HSA.

What assumptions do you use?

A 4% withdrawal rate, a 5% real return, target retirement age 65, lean spending at 70% and fat spending at 150% of current spending. You can change each one on the Settings tab.

Is this a subscription?

No. One payment. No recurring charge.

Is this financial advice?

No. The Waterfall Ledger is an educational tracking tool. Every reading is an estimate based on the numbers you enter.

Know your number before someone else decides it for you.
